SECTION II: LISTSERV RULES, INFORMATION, AND POLICIES

The purpose of the CIIS General Student Listserv is to provide a forum for sharing information among members of the CIIS community.  Topics may include housing, upcoming events, recommendation seeking, and more.

Please keep in mind a few “Principles of Community”:

·         Intent vs. impact: be aware that it is possible to have a negative impact on an individual despite best intentions

·         It is not OK to blame, shame, attack or discount self or others

All messages on this listserv are posted directly by listserv members. A member of the listserv who behaves inappropriately may be removed by the administrators.

CONFIDENTIALITY : It is never appropriate to discuss specific confidential information on the listserv.

EMAIL SIZE : Since this listserv has over 1,000 members, the preferred maximum size limit of email is 50 KB .  With the limited school internet bandwidth, when large emails are continually sent out, the bandwidth gets tied up, and websites such as myCIIS, library, ERes, and web access slow down.  Sending large emails has a negative impact on the entire community so please think twice before sending out emails with large sizes.

Some helpful tips:

SUBJECT HEADINGS: It helps if your subject headings are specific.  Many readers will decide to read, skim, or ignore your message based on the subject heading.

REPLYING TO MAIL: Use your email "reply" or “reply all” option carefully!

Should your reply go to hundreds of people or just one individual? Comments like "Yes, I agree." or questions like "Could you send me one, too?" should be directed to the individual (by clicking “reply”) whose message you are referring to, *NOT* everyone on the list (don’t click “reply all”). When you're in doubt, a private message is the right choice. If the recipient sees that your reply needs to be shared with the membership, s/he can always summarize or edit and quote your message and send it to the list.

CREATING A FILTER: We suggest that you create a filter in your email system. This means that emails sent to students@listserv.ciis.edu will be automatically sent to a separate subfolder and won't flood your inbox. Your email service should have instructions on how to do this.

How to CREATE A FILTER for your inbox:

Check the Help section of your host site/domain (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) or  your email software (e.g., Microsoft Entourage/Outlook,  Mac OS Mail.app, etc.).  Below are links to some of the more common domains:

o         Yahoo

o        Gmail

o        Hotmail

MAILBOXES THAT ARE FULL: If the administrators of the listserv receive bounceback emails from your account with the message that your inbox is full, you may be removed from the listserv.  To check the status of your listserv subscription, email studentaffairs@ciis.edu .

Please remember that this listserv is for sharing information and building community.  Enjoy!
